Fifty years ago, America reached a turning point in its long struggle to provide freedom and equality to all of its citizens. President Lyndon B. Johnson, with the help of a burgeoning civil rights movement, steered through Congress the Civil Rights Act of 1964. In recognition of this historic event, Lyndon B. Johnson National Historical Park will present a free public forum titled "Created Equal - America's Civil Rights Struggle"
The forum will feature an excerpt from the "1964" episode of the PBS documentary series "American Experience," showcasing major events of that year, including the passage of the Civil Rights Act. Dr. Gregg Michel, professor and chair of the history department at the University of Texas - San Antonio, will moderate the forum. Dr. Michel will facilitate a discussion addressing how the Civil Rights Act and other events of 1964 impacted the nation then and how they are relevant to American society today. Refreshments will follow the formal program.
This forum is part of a "Created Equal" initiative through a partnership with the Gilder-Lehrman Institute of American History, the National Endowment for the Humanities, the National Park Service, the Johnson City Library and the Friends of Lyndon B. Johnson National Historical Park.
