The Mid-Texas Symphony is excited to open its 2014-2015 concert season on September 14, 2014 at 4:00 p.m. in Jackson Auditorium on the Texas Lutheran University campus in Seguin!
David Mairs, Music Director, along with featured pianist Sean Chen, a Cliburn Crystal Award Winner, and the talented musicians of the symphony present their “Piano & Pastorale “ concert with Rossini’s Overture to Semiramide, Saint-Saëns’ Piano Concerto No. 2 in G minor, and Beethoven’s Symphony No. 6 in F major, “Pastorale.”
Featured guest, virtuoso pianist Sean Chen, has been hailed by the Huffington Post as “a rising star who has won over fans and critics” alike at the 2013 Cliburn Competition. Having “an exceptional ability to connect with an audience”, he is the first American to earn a Cliburn award since 1997. Maestro Mairs and the Mid-Texas Symphony are extremely pleased and proud that Mr. Chen has agreed to perform with them during their season’s opening concert.
“Audiences are sure to enjoy the lively and technically challenging, Overture to Semiramide,” said David Mairs. “Even though the opera was first performed in Venice in 1823, this overture remains a popular symphonic opener.”
Saint-Saëns wrote his Piano Concerto No. 2 in G minor in just three weeks! The concerto, performed by Sean Chen along with the orchestra, is energetic and challenging with some movements akin to “tickling the piano keys.”
“Pastorale” was created because of Beethoven’s love of nature; he spent a great deal of his time walking in the country and frequently left Vienna to work in rural locations. This piece is a favorite of symphony musicians and is played to evoke “visions of pastoral scenery.”
As part of the Mid-Texas Symphony’s long-time dedication to fostering the love of fine music in children, David Mairs, Sean Chen and the symphony will perform free concerts for area fifth and sixth graders on Monday, September 15, with more Children’s Concerts to follow on October 27.
Be a part of this growing musical trend in the region. Tickets ($5-$30) are available through the Mid-Texas Symphony’s on-line ticketing system at www.mtsymphony.org or by calling 830-372-8089. Tickets will also be available at the door. Like the Mid-Texas Symphony on Facebook!
