Description
The Bulverde Spring Branch community has a rare opportunity to celebrate Independence Day with Andrew Carroll, New York Times bestselling author and Founding Director of the Center for American War Letters at Chapman University.
In 1998, Andrew founded the Legacy Project, an all-volunteer initiative that honors veterans and active-duty troops by preserving their wartime correspondence. Andrew has traveled to all 50 states and more than 40 countries, including Iraq and Afghanistan, and he has collected an estimated 100,000 previously unpublished letters (and emails) from every war in U.S. history. Andrew donated this massive collection, free of charge, to Chapman University. The Legacy Project has been re-named “The Center for American War Letters,” and is now part of Chapman University. The Center’s mission is to continue to collect, preserve, and promote extraordinary war-related correspondences so that this generation and those to come will better understand the sacrifices and experiences of U.S. troops, veterans, and their loved ones.
Carroll’s books include, Letters of a Nation, Grace Under Fire, Operation Homecoming, and My Fellow Soldiers. These books are based on letters penned during the American Revolution through the Iraq and Afghanistan Wars.
He with be the guest speaker for the Bulverde/Spring Branch Friends of the Library (BSBFOL) 2018 Book and Author event at the Bulverde/Spring Branch Activity Center, 30280 Cougar Bend, on July 7 at 3PM. Carroll will share some of his favorite letters and why they are so important. A reception with heavy hors d’oeuvres will follow Andrew’s presentation with book sales and signing. Tickets are $30 each and will be on sale at the BSB Library, the BSB Activity Center, and through bsblibrary.org beginning June 4th. Proceeds will benefit the Bulverde/Spring Branch Library Expansion.
You may bring war letters to donate to the upcoming event and may have a photo taken giving them to Carroll. The form with additional information needed to archive your donation is available here. Letters will be preserved with the Center for American War Letters in Orange, California. Carroll is donating his time with the BSBFOL provided honorarium going to his Center for American War Letters.
