Description
The Library Chicks are here!
Join Ms. Lauren from the Comal AgriLife Extension Office to learn about the incubation process, egg hatching basics, and check if all the chicks are developing properly through the "candling" process.
The Hatching in the Classroom (or in our case, the Library) program is intended for school-age children, but the whole family is welcome! Please register each child that will be attending for the Extension Office's record-keeping purposes! **Registering once will register you for all three sessions**
Egg incubators are on display. Stop by the Children's Room at the library to see the eggs up close!
Activities from Home
Check out the activity pages in the Attachments section. Feel free to print them out and work on them at home. You can also visit the library to check out a chick hatching kit with your library card (limit of 1 kit per family). Can't visit the library? No problem! You can make your own chick hatching kit at home. You will need the following supplies:
- 2 egg cartons (dozen carton, or larger is fine)
- 21 plastic eggs (or real egg shells if your grown up can save them)
- A printout of the "Hatching Egg Countdown" sheet (see attachments section)
First start off by cutting out the 21 egg pictures from the sheet. Then place each picture inside of an egg. You can number each egg from 1-21 and then place them in the egg cartons. Feel free to paint or decorate your egg cartons. Open the eggs each day to see the growth of the chick! Don't forget to try the other activity sheets provided. Happy hatching!
