MAY is Asthma Awareness Month

MAY IS ASTHMA AWARENESS MONTH

Please note that Asthma does not exist in a vacuum, it is influenced by your environment, the air quality, and the community around you. Managing these conditions effectively goes beyond just medicine; it requires support from others. Support networks include everyone who plays a role in your health—family, friends, medical professionals, school staff, employers, neighbors, advocates, and policy makers.

With a strong community on your side, you can benefit from:

  • Improved daily symptom control
  • Healthier and more welcoming environments at home, school, and work
  • Greater access to diverse treatment options
  • Enhanced protection and policies to improve your quality of life
One great source of information is the American Lung Association's Asthma Basics course on their website. It is a free one-hour interactive online learning module designed to help people learn more about asthma. This course is ideal for frontline healthcare professionals, such as school nurses or community health workers, as well as individuals with asthma, parents of children with asthma, and co-workers, friends and family who want to learn more about asthma.
This free online program will teach participants to:
  • Recognize and manage triggers,
  • Understand the value of an asthma action plan, and
  • Recognize and respond to a breathing emergency.
One of the highlights of this learning module is the animation What Is Asthma? that shows the three primary changes in the airways during an asthma episode. Asthma Basics also includes comprehensive resources, including asthma medication devices and demonstration videos and downloads.
The following numbers highlight the importance of asthma education and proper treatment:
  • 28 million Americans are living with asthma
  • 5 million U.S. children are affected by asthma
  • The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates asthma causes around 455,000 deaths globally each year.
  • In the United States, asthma claims between 3,500 and 4,000 lives annually—about 11 people each day.
These facts highlight why the mission of our Foundation is so important. Many of these fatalities can be prevented with proper treatment and management. Yet, there’s still a significant gap in public awareness and available resources for asthma. The Amber N. D. Andaloro Asthma Foundation, also known as the ANDA Asthma Foundation, is dedicated to promoting education and sharing crucial information, enabling people in communities who suffer with asthma to lead healthier, safer lives. Our ongoing commitment is to empower more individuals to live actively and well.

With all this said, I am delighted to provide you with some wonderful Foundation updates.

It is an honor to announce that the ANDA Asthma Foundation is now a proud member of the Bulverde Spring Branch Area Chamber of Commerce. In just a short time since joining, the Chamber has provided us with tremendous support. Their dedication to our goal of promoting asthma awareness has meant a lot, and I greatly appreciate the warm and heartfelt reception we have received.

As a Chamber member, the Foundation now has access to valuable networking opportunities within the larger community. This partnership will help us further our efforts to raise asthma awareness among both adults and children living with this persistent, incurable disease in our community and beyond.

As part of our membership benefits, we have the opportunity to hold a ribbon-cutting ceremony to introduce the Foundation to the community and fellow Chamber members. I would like to invite a group of Foundation supporters to join the Andaloro family at this special event once it is scheduled.

The ribbon-cutting ceremony will take place in Spring Branch, Texas and refreshments will be provided.

If you would like to join us for this special occasion, please RSVP at your earliest convenience. Your presence will help make this ceremony even more memorable as we unite to celebrate our shared commitment to asthma awareness and support.

I am pleased to conclude this message by announcing another important development. Before the end of the Summer the ANDA Asthma Foundation will launch a redesigned website intended to broaden our outreach to individuals seeking information about asthma. Our goal is to address common concerns and provide comprehensive resources for asthma sufferers and their respective caregivers.

We sincerely appreciate and are so grateful for your ongoing support for our mission to promote Asthma Awareness.

Warmest regards,
Beverly A. Andaloro
