Resources for Hill Country College Prep High School Families
Resources for Hill Country College Prep HS Families
In light of today’s incident at Hill Country College Preparatory High School, we recognize that even when situations are resolved they can be emotionally unsettling for students and families. It is normal for children to experience a range of emotions after a lockdown, including confusion, fear, or lingering worry. Your support at home plays an important role in helping them process these feelings.
Common Reactions
- Increase in activity level
- Decrease in concentration and attention
- Increase in irritability and anger
- Sadness, grief, and/or withdrawal
- Physical complaints (headaches, stomachaches, aches and pains)
- Staying focused on the stressful event (talking repeatedly about it)
- Create space to talk: Encourage your child to share how they are feeling. Let them know it’s okay to feel upset, worried, or confused. Some children may prefer to draw, write, or play music as a creative outlet.
- Listen calmly: Try to listen without interrupting or rushing to “fix” their feelings. Your calm presence is reassuring.
- Offer reassurance: Remind your child that adults at school and in the community work together every day to keep students safe.
- Keep routines consistent: Regular schedules can help children feel secure and grounded.
- Limit exposure to rumors or social media: Too much information or speculation can increase anxiety.
- Watch for ongoing stress: Changes in sleep, appetite, mood, or behavior may be signs your child needs extra support.
If your child continues to experience distress, support is available:
- School Counselors and student support specialists will be available to speak with students who need support
- You may consider reaching out to your child’s pediatrician or a licensed mental health professional.
- Contact your health care insurance provider to identify in-network providers.
